On its 50th anniversary, Claude Lelouch’s lyrical film remains as strangely unfettered from emotional artifice as it was in 1966. Race car driver Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and script girl Anne (Anouk Aimée), both widowed, meet at their respective children’s boarding school in Deauville. Anne’s acceptance of Jean- Louis’ offer to drive her back to Paris marks the start of a reluctant relationship, one marked by reminiscences of their late spouses. Lelouch’s use of different film stocks gives the film its signature mix of black-and-white, color and toned sequences. With his intuitive camerawork, the partially improvised script and Francis Lai’s memorable score, A Man and A Woman has as much to say about love in the modern age as it does about cinema.
