Conflagration(Enjo)

  • Dir: Ichikawa Kon

  • Japan, 1958, Japanese, 99mins, DCP

  • Cast: Ichikawa Raizo, Nakamura Ganjiro, Nakadai Tatsuya

Mishima Yukio’s celebrated novel of a disturbed yet idealistic soul in torment is translated by Ichikawa Kon into an emotionally charged morality tale in coolly detached, painterly images. In a nuanced structure rendering the young monk’s descent towards final conflagration through flashbacks during police interrogation, Ichikawa Raizo’s engrossing performance invites sympathy for this stuttering temple novice who, entangled and disillusioned in a corrupting world, sees in the Golden Pavilion a purity of beauty that transcends his flawed existence. Through examining the spiritual and moral disintegration of the young man, Ichikawa turns his unflinching eyes to the hypocrisy of the post-war world.
