Flowing a.k.a. A House of Geisha
Dir: Naruse Mikio
Japan, 1956, 117 minmins, DCP
Cast: Yamada Isuzu, Tanaka Kinuyo, Takamine Hideko, Sugimura Haruko
Capturing life in changing time, Naruse’s adaptation of Koda Aya’s novel is a complex portrait about work, traditions and illusions of female camaraderie, pivoted on women cohabiting a geisha house in decline. Sharing the stage with some of her fellow finest actresses, Yamada Isuzu plays a proud mistress who strives to save not only her struggling establishment, but also a fading way of life. A magnificent ensemble piece merging the tragic with the triumphant – among them, Naruse’s delicately structured mise-en-scène.
