Joan the Maid: The Battles
Dir: Jacques Rivette
France, 1994, 160minmins, 35mm
Cast: Sandrine Bonnaire, Tatiana Moukhine, Jean-Marie Richier
Part one of Rivette’s cinematic epic on the life of Joan of Arc traces the teenager’s journey from unknown villager to a woman defending her spirituality and becoming the vanguard of the French army, leading to a decisive victory in Orleans. A work that stands out from the director’s films hitherto completed, Joan the Maid‘s materialist interpretation of a figure marked by legend and history is far from hagiography. Sandrine Bonnaire’s sobering portrayal of a young woman-warrior renders an arguably more realistic and well-rounded portrait of a person who, in a very human way, struggles with the meaning of her convictions. Rivette plays a cameo role as a priest who blesses the young Joan before she leaves home.
