Kiss of the Spider Woman
Dir: Héctor Babenco
Brazil/USA, 1985, 120minmins, DCP
Cast: William Hurt, Raul Julia, Sonia Braga
A cramped, depressing prison cell. An odd couple with too many differences. As time goes by, macho political prisoner Valentin gradually accepts the flamboyant homosexual Luis and his pulp movie fictions, and they develop a bond that may seem too dangerous, as the beguiling spider woman creeps into Valentin’s fantasies… Brazilian director Hector Babenco mixes reality and fantasy in this visually compelling film about manhood, heroism and love. Made during a politically conservative time, the film is a bold statement for human dignity and compassion within a society that denies it, and it has lost none of its power over the years. William Hurt won multiple best actor awards with his carefully nurtured and profoundly moving gay role, a testimony that life is a choice – not sexual, but between freedom and slavery.
