Lolita
Dir: Stanley Kubrick
UK / USA, 1962, 153minmins, DCP
Cast: James Mason, Shelley Winters, Sue Lyon
“Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul.” So Vladimir Nabokov began his iconic novel of a solipsistic professor and his obsession for the adolescent lover, creating a moral universe that continues to confront and divide critics and viewers to this day. The great Kubrick, in turn, shifted elements – not always with Nabokov’s agreement – into his own hypnotic odyssey, anchored by the performances of James Mason, Shelley Winters, Peter Sellers and the 14-year-old Sue Lyon. It’s also Kubrick’s first film about madness of the individual, which is at times darkly comic and heartbreakingly sad, and it pre-figures his last masterpiece, Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
