Miss Oyu
Dir: Mizoguchi Kenji
Japan, 1951, 94minmins, 35mm
Cast: Tanaka Kiunyo, Otawa Nobuko, Hori Yuji
In the changing worlds of postwar Japan, Mizoguchi turned to a 1932 novel by Tanizaki Junichiro to portray a powerful triad of women’s constraints, sacrifices and mutual support. Younger sister Shinnosuke, on the marriage market, is introduced to Shizu as a suitable match. Yet Shizu becomes enamored of her older and widowed sister, Oyu, who must sacrifice her life to raise her son to be head of her husband’s family. Together, they create an unusual but loving feminist interpretation of a family.
