The Elephant Man

  • Dir: David Lynch

  • USA, 1980, English, 123mins, DCP

  • Cast: Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Anne Bancroft

The closest Lynch came to crafting a conventional Hollywood prestige picture was this exquisitely staged retelling of the life and trials of Joseph Merrick, a severely deformed man living in Victorian-era London. From his exploitation in freak shows to his celebrity status within high society, the film echoes the sentiments of Tod Browning’s Freaks by championing the humanity and dignity of marginalised individuals, persecuted and victimised simply for looking different. Featuring a veritable who’s who of British acting royalty, and lensed in stunning monochrome by Hammer veteran Freddie Francis, Lynch unearths genuine tenderness within the inevitable tragedy.
