Till We Meet Again

  • Dir: Frank Borzage

  • USA, 1944, English, 88mins, DCP

  • Cast: Ray Milland, Barbara Britton, Walter Slezak, Lucile Watson

Driven by guilt at having jeopardised the life of an American aviator, and leading to the Mother Superior's death, a French novice nun poses as his wife in order to aid his escape, during which the two develops an unspoken desire for each other. Akin to 7th Heaven and Street Angel in its romantic lyricism, Borzage’s elegant black-and-white cinematography flows like a beautiful litany, building a bridge between Earth and Heaven, desire and divinity that transcends redemptive love. Exploring the meaning of religious spirituality during wartime, the film asserts that loving someone can serve as a substitute for loving God; it is through suffering and personal sacrifice, their souls consummately united, and she can gracefully embrace what true faith is.

Restored in 4K by Universal Pictures and The Film Foundation at NBCUniversal StudioPost laboratory, from the original 35mm negative nitrate, a 35mm composite fine grain and the 35mm optical sound track negative nitrate. Special thanks to Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
