  • Dir: Emir Kusturic

  • Yugoslavia/France, 1995, Serbian, 164mins, DCP

  • Cast: Miki Manojlovic, Lazar Ristovski, Mirjana Jokovic, Slavko Stimac

A satirical epic about the decline of Yugoslavia, Kusturica’s second Palme d’Or winner still looks delirious in its excess with its awe-inspiring artistic vision that melds tragedy with optimism. Taking an allencompassing perspective from World War II to the Balkan wars, this sprawling allegory is communicated powerfully through the trials and tribulations of two anti-Nazi arms dealers who become accidental revolutionary heroes. Laced with outrageous dark humour and unspeakable pain and suffering, it strings out the deception of communism that keeps its people in ignorance – but only takes a chimp to blast it out.
