Alain Delon passed away. What meant to be a salute to a great living artist, our programme unexpectedly becomes a tribute to a gone legend.
French President Emmanuel Macron said Delon ‘was more than a star: a French monument’. Despite being often underestimated because of his looks, Delon was one of the greatest actors of his generation. He is immortalised in LE SAMOURAÏ, where he defined French cool as a solitary contract killer - a seductive man filled with inner turmoil, so earnest and immaculate as to be thought lethal or potent. It is Delon’s improbably handsome face and elegant style that makes the assassin so unforgettable – and irreplaceable.
In Melville’s minimalist film noir, Delon’s sullen, lone wolf antihero remains one of the most memorable characters in film history. Under a meticulously designed monochromatic aesthetic vividly revived in the new 4K restoration, Delon’s portrayal of the killer is evocative of the chivalrous spirit of Japanese samurai, melancholic, secretive yet dashingly charming – an iconic character that inspired a lengthy list of admirers.
