Corneliu Porumboiu’s winner of the Caméra d'Or at Cannes elevates farce to a whole new level of absurdity through an unlikely scenario – the commemoration of history. A few days before Christmas, a television talk-show host in the small city of Vaslui marks the 16th anniversary of the overthrow of dictator Ceaușescu by posing a provocative question: Was there a revolution in our town? As his guests try to recall their participation and witness from that day in the square, callers phone in to challenge their testimonies. Conjuring the ghosts of revolution past, Porumboiu’s satirical parody skillfully explores the tenuous relationship between history, memory, and truth – if any truth exists at all.
