71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance(71 Fragmente einer Chronologie des Zufalls)
Dir: Michael Haneke
Austria/Germany , 1994, German/Romanian, 100mins, DCP
Cast: Gabriel Cosmin Urdes, Lukas Miko, Otto Grünmandl
The third and final instalment of Michael Haneke’s trilogy once again probes the effects of violence by chronicling the lives of several unconnected characters – a young illegal migrant from Romania, a bank teller, a lonely retired man, a childless couple who are trying to adopt, and a college student – until their lives collide in a random act of violence. Delivering a series of brief snippets of everyday life without hackneyed psychological probing or easy explanations, Haneke’s most challenging work uses its fragmented narrative structure to question the casual and alienated manner with which we consume and trivialise violent acts in the age of information.
