A Married Woman(UNE FEMME MARIÉE)

  • Dir: Jean-Luc Godard

  • France, 1964, French, 95mins, DCP

  • Cast: Macha Méril, Bernard Noel, Philippe Leroy, Roger Leenhardt

One of Godard’s most tender and poetic films, and an unflinching portrayal of marriage and infidelity, in response to Truffaut’s Soft Skin (1964). Charlotte, a married woman who is having an affair with a young actor, has to decide which man to stay with when she discovers herself pregnant. A modernist collage of all the complexities, mysteries, truths, beauty and grace of a woman, the film is also a biting critique on consumer culture. The close-ups of the dissociated body parts, together with the lovers’ discourse on the soundtrack make the film feels eternally fresh and sensuous.
