In a marriage dominated by torturous family relationships, a couple’s superficial bond is shattered when their loan for running a café is given away to the wastrel older brother. Frustrated by her husband’s infirmity, the wife only finds solace when discussing her insoluble problems with her banker friend. Under Naruse’s magnificent direction, along with the consummate performances by Takamine Hideko and Mifune Toshiro, the deepest emotions are only expressed in the subtlest of gestures, as nature dictates the ending of their final encounter.
