A Woman is a Woman

  • Dir: Jean-Luc Godard

  • France, 1961, 85minmins

  • Cast: Anna Karina, Jean-Paul Belmondo,Jean-Claude Brialy

Just when you‘re sure someone MUST sing: they don’t. Instead, Godard creates a deconstructed musical homage, where a stripper sings of breasts and lush music comments, interrupts or misdirects us. The triangle comes with a soupcon of Buñuel – the charming wife, jaded husband, comical best friend – and adds its own French twists. The young actors – Anna Karina, Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean-Claude Brialy – are charming and Paris lovely in Technicolor and Cinemascope. So, sit back for the Hollywood musical as you have never seen it before.
