A Woman is a Woman(UNE FEMME EST UNE FEMME)
Dir: Jean-Luc Godard
France, 1961, French, 84mins, DCP
Cast: Anna Karina, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean-Claude Brialy
Godard’s first film after marrying Anna Karina, which shot her to stardom and garnered the Berlinale Special Jury Prize and Best Actress Award. Here, the woman of the title is an engaging exotic dancer in an impossibly nice strip club, who wants a child either with her uncommitted lover or his eager best friend. Wrapping their tangled lives in colour, CinemaScope, musical romance, and countless cinematic allusions, Godard reinterprets the Hollywood genre – including its music – and questions the course of love itself through his emergent lens.
