An office drone careens into a labyrinth of torment in Martin Scorsese’s mischievous black comedy. After meeting cute with a mystery woman, clean-cut Paul is in for a rough night across town in the grimy SoHo district. An old trauma is rekindled and soon he’s on the run, panicking and penniless in an alien landscape of conceptual art, forlorn bar staff and local vigilantes. Scorsese channelled recent career setbacks into the low-budget tale of a down-on-his-luck man stumped at every turn, then threw in repeat motifs, film references and heaps of hometown flavour. A quirky time capsule of New York’s grottier days, and an enduring cult hit.
