A modernist and poetic contemplation of emotional severity that renders the real-life conflicts between the longtime collaborators all the more painful and romantic, Miéville proves herself to be a great filmmaker in her own right, and it becomes clear that her emotional insight has begun to influence Godard as early as the late 1970s.
