Alphaville
Dir: Jean-Luc Godard
France, 1965, English/French, 99mins, DCP
Cast: Eddie Constantine, Anna Karina, Akim Tamiroff, Howard Vernon
The future in the present, or, for us, the past. Working with modernist Paris itself, Godard created a dystopian black & white future noir, anchored by the unforgettable presence of rain-coated detective Lemmy Caution on a mysterious mission. Befriended by Natacha, played by the darkly luminous Anna Karina, Caution battles the malevolent computer that rules the city of Alphaville, meanwhile teaches Natacha the meaning of ‘love’. A science fiction without special effects and on a shoestring budget, Godard demonstrates the way to depict the future and won the Golden Bear for Best Film in Berlinale.
