Amagi Pass(Amagi goe)

  • Dir: Mimura Haruhiko

  • Japan, 1983, Japanese, 98mins, 35mm, Category III

  • Cast: Watase Tsunehiko, Tanaka Yuko, Kiki Kirin

After directing seven films based on Matsumoto Seicho crime stories, Nomura Yoshitaro became producer for this retelling of the writer’s work. First-time helmer Mimura Haruhiko turns a 1958 short story into slow-burn psychological drama, teasing out hidden motives behind a cold case. When a semi-retired cop visits a printshop with his memoirs, conversation turns to a rural murder he investigated 40 years earlier. What comes out is a tragic picture of longing and guilt within a saga sullied by miscarriage of justice. A richly evocative tale, with a murdered geisha emerging as a haunting central figure.
