An American in Paris
Dir: Vincente Minnelli
USA, 1951, 113minmins
Cast: Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron, Oscar Levant
Not your usual love triangle, since the kept “mistress” is a male. Director Vincente Minnelli and star Gene Kelly brings unusual dimensions to this story of a struggling American expatriate painter in postwar Paris, dancing (elegantly and literally) between his haughty patroness with benefits (Nina Foch) and the girl (Leslie Caron) who steals his heart by the Seine. All framed with witty asides by Oscar Levant. Bubbling with songs by George and Ira Gershwin (“I Got Rhythm”, “‘S Wonderful”) and an unforgettable climactic 17-minute ballet sequence of love and dancing.
