An Uneventful Story(Nieciekawa historia)

  • Dir: Wojciech Jerzy Has

  • Poland, 1983, Polish, 106mins, DCP

  • Cast: Gustaw Holoubek, Hanna Mikuć, Anna Milewska

Condensing the sadness of Anton Chekhov's short story with post-war despair, Has also interposes his own bitterness of a ten-year ban in filmmaking for unauthorised submission of The Hourglass Sanatorium to Cannes into this 19th-century story. Starring his regular Gustaw Holoubek as an aging medical professor, this intimate yet kaleidoscopic film quietly observes his existence, consisting primarily of insomnia, diminishing mental dexterity, and fading love for his wife. His internal monologue brings viewers into complicity with his disillusionment, sensing both the meaninglessness of life and the proximity to death – and Has’ own existential regrets.
