Natsume’s writing scored lavish treatment when director Morita Yoshimitsu tackled the 1909 serialturned- novel And Then. Young intellectual Daisuke traipses through life and repeatedly turns down a marriage that would benefit his father and brother, but idle days are upended when an old classmate turns up with his ailing wife. Soon Daisuke must contend with past misjudgement and voice feelings long concealed. The bottled-up emotions and cultural shifts of earlier Natsume adaptations return, yet Morita makes the lush period piece his own with minimalist drama, surreal flourishes, and mounting melancholy and heartbreak.
