And Then We Danced
Dir: Levan Akin
Sweden/Georgia/France, 2019, 113 minmins, DCP
Cast: Levan Gelbakhiani, Bachi Valishvili, Ana Javakishvili
A powerful tale of masculinity and movement, framed by class, national identity and religion in contemporary Georgia. Merab and his family have devoted generations to Georgian dance – both his grandmother and his father were dancers and his brother David also dances with the National Georgian Ensemble. While this dedication has barely assured their everyday survival, Merab’s constant partner, Mary, wants to create another generation. But a striking new male dancer, Irakli, joins the troupe, sparking Merab’s competition as well as feelings forbidden and condemned in his world and his dance.
