Andrei Rublev(Andrey Rublyov)

  • Dir: Andrei Tarkovsky

  • USSR, 1966, Russian/Italian, 183mins, DCP

  • Cast: Anatoly Solonitsyn, Ivan Lapikov, Nikolai Sergeyev

‘Art exists to help us deal with the world’s imperfections.’ Seeing parallels in the trials and tribulations of Andrei Rublev, Tarkovsky traces the life of Russia’s greatest icon painter in an epic portrait of belief, creativity and the search for meaning. Down in the muck and chaos of the medieval world, the wandering artist had his faith and his art sorely tested by the hellish brutalities, along the tides of history through gruesome Tartar raids, bizarre pagan rituals, famine, plague and genocide. Hovering like an angel over the suffering terrain, Tarkovsky’s poetic camera paints a monochromatic landscape of forlorn yet mesmerising splendour, culminating in the final montage of Rublev’s paintings in an ultimate burst of colour.
