Marlene Dietrich is the wealthy and frustrated Maria, wife of an inattentive British diplomat, who is too busy with his career to tend to her happiness. During a secret sojourn in Paris, she has an anonymous tryst with a charming war veteran, only to discover he is an old army acquaintance of her husband, and has fallen desperately in love with her.
