Angel
Dir: Ernst Lubitsch
USA, 1937, English, 91mins, DCP
Cast: Marlene Dietrich, Herbert Marshall, Melvyn Douglas
Marlene Dietrich is the wealthy and frustrated Maria, wife of an inattentive British diplomat, who is too busy with his career to tend to her happiness. During a secret sojourn in Paris, she has an anonymous tryst with a charming war veteran, only to discover he is an old army acquaintance of her husband, and has fallen desperately in love with her. With Angel, Lubitsch flits effortlessly between comedy and melodrama, as the film builds to an unpredictable and quietly devastating climax, which sees Dietrich at her steely and statuesque best.
