Stanley Donen followed his classic crime caper Charade with another Hitchcockian tale of international espionage, that thrills with the style and swagger of a vintage James Bond movie. When Gregory Peck's mild-mannered American academic is tasked with deciphering a strange hieroglyphic cipher, he is thrown together with Loren’s smouldering Middle Eastern femme fatale – decked out in glamorous Dior. What unspools is a breathless chase through 60s London, brimming with fast cars and Henry Mancini’s exotica-tinged score. Donen makes eye-catching use of mirrors and lenses as he ramps up the duplicitous intrigue that elevates this exhilarating mystery.
