Arizona Dream

  • Dir: Emir Kusturic

  • USA/France, 1993, English, 140mins, DCP

  • Cast: Johnny Depp, Jerry Lewis, Faye Dunaway, Lili Taylor, Vincent Gallo

Crafting his magical realism onto brash Arizona landscapes, Kusturica’s first and only American film embraces a liberating lunacy that dares the Hollywood conventions of cookie-cutter filmmaking. Starring Johnny Depp as an unambitious fish warden, the droll psychodrama lets magic happen as he becomes embroiled in the lives of four weirdos: his uncle selling pink Cadillacs, his movie-mad cousin parroting De Niro’s best-loved lines, a deranged widow dreaming to fly, and her stepdaughter wishing to reincarnate as a turtle. Maddeningly indulgent and eccentric, it’s more than a fish levitating through the great American dream.
