Basic Instinct

  • Dir: Paul Verhoeven

  • USA/France, 1992, 127minmins

  • Cast: Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone never reveals everything, but… In her most twisted role as a bisexual crime novelist Catherine Tramell, whose work mirrors (or predicts) violence. She may also be a sociopathic criminal: Stone dances a deadly pas de deux with an equally troubled detective, portrayed by Michael Douglas. Their relationship spins through murders and deaths, whether the original case in question – who remembers the rock star killed early on? – or the myriad possible murderers, lovers or investigators caught and killed in the primal drive to survive. A morally complex film that treads the fine line between exploitation and satirical commentary, Verhoeven successfully teases the audience at his most Hitchcockian.
