Bitter Reunion
Dir: Claude Chabrol
France, 1958, 99 minmins, DCP
Cast: Gérard Blain, Jean-Claude Brialy, Michèle Méritz
Chabrol’s first completed film, not only of himself but of the French New Wave, is at once mature and accomplished, directed with a sure hand. Two old friends from Sardent reunite. The tubercular François has become a doctor but his friend, Serge, was trapped by marriage and slipped into alcoholism after the stillbirth of his child. Nonetheless, François fights to save his friend, dragging him through the snow to attend the successful birth of his next child. An interesting companion piece to the rural urban dyad of The Cousins.
