Black Narcissus

  • Dir: Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger

  • UK, 1947, English, 101mins, DCP

  • Cast: Deborah Kerr, David Farrar, Sabu, Kathleen Byron, Jean Simmons

Evoking eroticism in every frame and image, Black Narcissus is still revelatory in its exploration of repressed desire, temptation and delirium under contemporary eyes. Set in a remote convent up in the Indian Himalayas, this psychosexual melodrama casts on Deborah Kerr's Sister Clodagh and her fellow nuns, who are on a mission to form a school and hospital, but are confronted with their buried memories and unfulfilled yearnings awakened by mountain gales and exotic culture. Mostly shot in Pinewood Studios, the film’s plethora of intoxicating colours and inventive use of matte paintings create a myth-like realm where obsession and possession, fantasy and reality collide.
