Cabaret
Dir: Bob Fosse
USA, 1972, 124minmins
Cast: Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem
Another little girl lost, Vincent Minnelli’s daughter Liza takes us into the chaotic changes of Nazi Berlin. Inside the Kit-Kat Klub, even the orchestra is beautiful (Joel Grey’s leering MC tells us) but in the outside world, love, trust and even security are besieged by rising fascism, anti-Semitism and myriad betrayals of a world of shifting appearances. Where perhaps the only time truth appears is on the stage itself in songs that speak to sex, power and history while providing damn good entertainment.
