City Lights

  • Dir: Charles Chaplin

  • USA, 1931, 87 minsmins, DCP

A perennial favorite of directors from Welles to Fellini – and of Chaplin himself – the laughs of this film come with lyrical romanticism and sad tricks of fate only the Little Tramp could evoke. Already an anachronism in its day, Chaplin embraced silence for one last film (while providing his own score), but the film remains timeless as the love of a down-and-out man and a blind flower girl, balanced and abetted by the comic relief of a drunken millionaire, captures the hearts of new generations of fans.
