Cobra Verde

  • Dir: Werner Herzog

  • West Germany, 1987, 111minmins, DCP

A project that pushed the volatile relationship between Herzog and Klaus Kinski to the brink of homicide, their last collaboration completes a trilogy of mayhem and megalomania along with Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo . Kinski plays the Brazilian rancher who, after losing everything in a drought, becomes notorious as the most feared bandit. Punished by the wealthy sugar baron after impregnating his three daughters, he was sent on an impossible mission to Africa to reopen the slave trade and achieved miraculous success. Under the grandeur and ferocity of Herzog’s cinematic ambition, it’s an intoxicating pleasure to watch Kinski do horrible things so astonishingly well.
