Cul-de-sac
Dir: Roman Polanski
UK, 1966, 113minmins, DCP
Cast: Donald Pleasence, Françoise Dorléac, Jacqueline Bisset, Lionel Stander
Roman Polanski takes the mental ménage à trois of his debut feature Knife in the Water to an isolated island where the slyly absurd tale of paranoia is disguised under macabre humor. As their secluded home is invaded by a brash, sturdy American gangster on the run, a withdrawn couple’s seemingly ordered world is broken by an eruption of nightmarish chaos – sexual perversity, betrayal, corruption and self-destruction. Hailed as “the grimmest of comedies, most hilarious of tragedies,” this Berlinale Golden Bear winner is regarded by Polanski himself as one of his best “true cinema.”
