Day of Wrath(Vredens dag)

  • Dir: Carl Theodor Dreyer

  • Denmark, 1943, Danish, 97mins, DCP

  • Cast: Thorkild Roose, Lisbeth Movin, Sigrid Neiiendam

His first film in 11 years, Dreyer's adaptation of the play by Hans Wiers-Jenssen follows a young woman who is forced to marry an elderly pastor after her mother is accused of witchcraft. Falling in love with his son, she in turn becomes a target of witch hunt. The film’s depiction of a bleak world in which women are persecuted by a tyrannical patriarchy was read by some as a reflection of the Nazi occupation, though it was denied by the director. Nevertheless, its meticulously composed frames and meditative pace prove that Dreyer remained a filmmaker who still prioritised the power of the image even as sound cinema was in full swing.
