Days of Being Wild

  • Dir: Wong Kar Wai

  • 1990, Cantonese, Shanghainese, 94mins, DCP

  • Cast: Leslie Cheung, Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung, Carina Lau, Jacky Cheung, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai

"Wong Kar Wai began a career-spanning obsession with nostalgia for the Hong Kong of his childhood years with this dreamlike and beguiling ensemble piece about love, lust and disillusionment in 1960s Hong Kong. Wong’s idiosyncratic storytelling rhythm, Christopher Doyle’s lush green hue, and its entrancing and moody soundtrack (strengthened even further on this Wong-supervised 4K remastered version) not only made this a defining work of its era, it also established Wong as a cinematic visionary who would influence generations of aspiring filmmakers worldwide. Channelling James Dean, Leslie Cheung’s charismatic turn as a ne’er-do-well playboy and self-proclaimed ‘bird without legs’ continues to be celebrated as one of Hong Kong cinema’s most iconic performances of all time.
