Diary for My Loves(Napló szerelmeimnek)

  • Dir: Márta Mészáros

  • Hungary, 1987, Hungarian, 131mins, DCP

  • Cast: Zsuzsa Czinkóczi, Jan Nowicki, Anna Polony, Mari Szemes

Picking up where Diary for My Children left off in Hungary in 1953, this second diary follows alter-ego Juli, now 18, as she shifts between Moscow and Budapest to pursue her dream of becoming a film director, while tending to her lover imprisoned under the Stalinist purges and searching for her missing father. Skillfully interpolating her characters into history through newsreel footage, Mészáros constructs a bleakly unflattering yet remarkably intricate portrait of her floundering adolescence and the political upheavals of the new Hungary after the death of Stalin – face to face, these two histories reflect on each other.
