Dressed to Kill
Dir: Brian De Palma
USA, 1980, 105minmins
Cast: Michael Caine, Angie Dickinson, Nancy Allen
De Palma penetrates a sensual Hitchcockian world, as a beautiful, married – and frustrated – Manhattan woman (Angie Dickinson) fantasizes about a sexual tryst in a steamy shower, comes on to her psychiatrist (Michael Caine), and finally hooks up with a stranger she meets at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. De Palma’s erotic thriller most closely resembles Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960), but also nods to Vertigo (1958), Rear Window (1954) and even North by Northwest (1959). As critic Pauline Kael wrote in The New Yorker , De Palma “presents extreme fantasies and pulls the audience into them with such apparent ease that the pleasure of the suspense becomes aphrodisiacal.”
