Encounters at the End of the World

  • Dir: Werner Herzog

  • USA, 2007, 99minmins, DCP

Werner Herzog is no David Attenborough, his journeys to Antarctica is far more than the stunning landscape, or the beautiful images of seals swimming under the eternal ice. Asking a marine ecologist if there are gay or crazy penguins, he finds the Klaus Kinski of the species, heading to certain death. In his exhibit of eccentrics, the scientists at the McMurdo Research Station, which looks more like a future space settlement, get to the heart of the romantic wanderer. A poem of oddness and beauty, contemplating the mysteries of life and death of our planet, and of mankind.

2009 Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature
