Enter the Void

  • Dir: Gaspar Noé

  • France, Germany, Italy, 2009, English, 161mins, DCP

  • Cast: Nathaniel Brown, Paz de la Huerta, Cyril Roy

Arguably the crowning achievement of enfant terrible Gaspar Noé’s cinematic oeuvre, his first-person psychedelic odyssey remains a wildly hallucinatory epic. The narrative concerns American siblings Oscar and Linda, who struggle to survive in present day Tokyo through drug dealing and working as a nightclub stripper. When Oscar is killed during a police bust, his spirit ascends above the Tokyo skyline. From this transcendental vantage point, Oscar – and the audience – experiences abortion, creation, violence, drug use and explicit sex, but Noé’s unflinching direction remains stunning throughout, unleashing a kaleidoscope of imagery that transports us far beyond the infinite.
