Eraserhead
Dir: David Lynch
USA, 1977, English, 89mins, DCP
Cast: Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, Allen Joseph
In a smog-choked industrial dystopia, a young man is invited for dinner to meet his girlfriend’s parents, only to learn that she has had his baby – a deformed limbless monstrosity – and the couple are forced to marry. So begins Lynch’s endlessly surreal debut feature film, a grim manifestation of the director’s own anxieties of being a penniless new husband and father. Brimming with grotesque imagery and fuelled by a nightmarish dream logic that defies interpretation, Eraserhead remains as profoundly hypnotic, aurally unsettling, and darkly humorous as ever, standing unchallenged as one of American independent cinema’s most iconic cult classics.
