Farewells(Pożegnania)
Dir: Wojciech Jerzy Has
Poland, 1958, Polish, 103mins, DCP
Cast: Maria Wachowiak, Tadeusz Janczar, Gustaw Holoubek
What seems like an ill-fated love story permeated with numerous farewells is a quintessentially Has’ tale of alienation, yearning, and loss, set before and after World War II. Drawn together by their mirrored personality, the spoiled bourgeois student and the fiercely intelligent-minded dancer are subsequently driven apart by social conventions and the winds of war. An ironic counterpoint to Andrzej Wajda’s Ashes and Diamonds , Has’ hero is neither adorned with revolutionary passion, nor redemptive love; unable to escape from his own shadow, he is but a one-man anthem for Polish doomed youth, an existential void that prevails over the future of a nation.
