Germany Year 90 Nine Zero(ALLEMAGNE 90 NEUF ZÉRO)
Dir: Jean-Luc Godard
France, 1991, French/German, 60mins, DCP
Cast: Eddie Constantine, Hanns Zischler, Claudia Michelsen
Asked by producer Nicole Ruelle to make a creative documentary on loneliness, Godard responds by showing the loneliness of post-Berlin-Wall Germany. This loose sequel to Alphaville follows old secret agent Lemmy Caution – old Eddie Constantine back again 26 years later – making his way back to the West through a landscape littered with history. The film moves from the collapse of communism to the collapse of individual consciousness in the face of industrial capitalism. Lemmy/Godard finds it difficult to choose between the East and the West, both contributing to the schizophrenia of modern Europe.
