Goodbye to the Past(a.k.a. Partings (Rozstanie))

A great companion piece to Farewells , this sensitive post-war drama is suffused with an acknowledgement of ephemerality, loss, and regret in its exploration of class and the social structure of Polish society. Returning to her hometown on the occasion of her grandfather’s funeral, a Warsaw-based actress finds herself out of place in the grand old villa, detached from the aristocratic relatives who take on the myriad forms of acting. Bookended with the passage of trains, Has’ ironically subtitled ‘A Sentimental Comedy’ ruminates, with a whisper of Chekhovian sympathy, on the strange burden and disappointment of traditions, families, and their inevitable dissolution.
