The title’s wordplay – with ‘summer’ in Chinese and a hint of mockery in English – underscores the biting humour and sophisticated exploration of duality in a Hong film. This midsummer sex comedy revolves around a dim-witted director and a film critic who bond over drinks while recounting their recent visits to Tongyeong. Unbeknownst to them, the follies and misadventures they experienced involved the same people at nearly the same time. In a cynical contrast to men’s intellectual pretensions and self-absorbed delusions, women express candid and reflective emotions about love and sex, making Hong’s narrative all the more vibrant and refreshing.
