Heaven Can Wait

  • Dir: Ernst Lubitsch

  • USA, 1943, English, 112mins, DCP

  • Cast: Don Ameche, Gene Tierney, Charles Coburn

Arriving in Hell, the elderly Henry Van Cleve is denied entry until his life has been assessed by the infernal Excellency. And so Henry recounts his spoilt, promiscuous existence, not least his passionate yet tempestuous marriage to a small-town country gal. Predating Powell and Pressburger’s A Matter of Life and Death (1946), this Lubitsch’s only film in ravishing Technicolor is widely praised as one of the greatest in his late films, with his trademark blend of wit, grace and sensitivity anchored by a pair of charming performances.
