Dir: Michael Haneke
France/Austria/Germany/Italy, 2005, French, 117mins, DCP
Cast: Daniel Auteuil, Juliette Binoche, Maurice Bénichou
Paranoia and guilt stemming from France’s dark colonial history clash in shocking ways in Haneke’s morally complex thriller. The tranquil life of an upper-middle-class family is disturbed when they are sent tapes that show their home under surveillance by an unknown figure. As patriarch Georges tries to investigate the tapes’ source, he is forced to confront the shame from an appalling act from his childhood. However, don’t expect a traditional whodunit from Haneke; the filmmaker is merely employing the conventions of the genre to craft a quietly captivating meditation on guilty conscience, blame, and rose-tinted truths that feature brilliant performances by Daniel Auteuil and Juliette Binoche.
