I Served the King of England(Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále)
Dir: Jiří Menzel
Czech Republic / Slovakia, 2006, Czech, 119mins, DCP
Cast: Ivan Barnev, Oldřich Kaiser, Julia Jentsch
Short in stature – also on political awareness and social conscience – Dítĕ dreams high of becoming a millionaire. Walking out of prison after a 15-year sentence, the diminutive waiter looks back on his eventful life, recounting how he advanced his interests through the world of debauchery and his marriage to a Hitlerite, as he happily fulfilled his dream of owning a hotel – yet losing it at the same time. Adding wicked and absurd fun to Hrabal’s fond satirical fantasia, Menzel makes a distinctive take on the vicissitudes of Czech history, creating ironies of capitalism, socialism, invasion and morality – hilarious, rueful yet achingly moving.
